Writing and Research
Grants and Proposals
I've written successful grant applications to foundations, both large and small, as well as local, state, and federal governments. I'm skilled at telling your story in your voice. I also can help research relevant grant opportunities, and I know how to navigate this fund development landscape because I've worked closely with foundations and government agencies for over 20 years.
Want to sharpen your own grant writing skills? Let's talk about that, too!
Assessments and reports
I design and administer self assessments, surveys, focus groups, and key person interviews. I also compile and analyze data into helpful reports that inform planning and development.
Here's an example of a very recent report commissioned by Broadway Rose Theatre Company: I interviewed 12 actors of color in the Portland area about theatre, musical theatre, and their experiences as actors in the Portland theatre scene. Broadway Rose has given permission to publish excerpts here. I'm working with this theater on a five-year ACE plan (Authentic Community Engagement) to develop their organization and their audiences.
Check out this story from California on groups working across cultures and communities to ensure healthy, livable communities for everyone: This is an inspiring and thought-provoking effort that demonstrates what can be done by funders, community leaders, and community members. I did this work in collaboration with the Center for Collaborative Planning, a center of the Public Health Institute. It was funded by The California Endowment for their Building Healthy Communities initiative.
I wrote several issue briefs for California Healthy Cities and Communities, which were funded by the California Department of Public Health to explore healthy food issues in low-income communities and communities of color. This one is about the benefits of Community Gardens—including community building:
